Esmeralda B - I am From Poem

 Core Memories

Word Count: 363

I am from the nickname Melala which my brother gave me because he couldn't pronounce my name.

I belong to the silly tradition of smashing each other’s faces into cakes when it’s our birthdays.

I am from Lizzy, my stuffed animal that I got on my first field trip.

Growing up hearing Mexican urban legends to keep us from doing bad things.

I am from sucking my thumb to the point where my parents tied it into a sock AND put garlic on it.

And I come from my little piano and microphone that recorded me singing my little heart out.

I am from a two story house with stairs that my brother and I would slide down on with cardboard.

I had a princess bunk bed that I would tinkle on several times from the nightmares I got about snakes.

I am from waking up early to play Super Smash Bros on the Wii.

My go to character was always and still is Princess Peach.

And whenever a Spanish fast paced song came on my cousins, my brother and me would all run around as fast as we could like we were playing tag.

I am from feeling insecure about my body because people always point it out.

I'm no beauty queen

I've learned to love myself  for who I am because that’s the price of beauty.

I am from any picture of my brother and I together, I know I will have my arm around his shoulder.

I’m a part of a tiny preschool classroom in Arizona that had me draw my favorite character Makka Pakka.

I am from a boy who poked me in the eye with a corner of a book on accident.

Perhaps that is where my bad eyesight came from.

I am from getting bullied for my shortness

I am from the night light I had that without fail would shine bright in the darkness whenever I was scared.

That might be why I enjoy bringing happiness into people’s lives and guiding them out of their darkness.

And ultimately I am from a loving family tree who all have the will of fire blazing in their hearts.

  1. Yes Esmeralda, I love this! I really enjoyed the hinted comedy, especially when you talked about how your parents attempted to stop you from sucking your thumb and how you referenced a possible cause of your bad eye sight. I loved that your stanzas were both core memories but also much deeper than that; I got goosebumps from "I've learned to love myself for who I am because that's the price of beauty". Your powerful ending also tied everything together!
