“Hope is not a strategy” is a quote that I agree with and
can apply to my own life. If one were to simply sit around and do nothing
except remain hopeful that things will get better, nothing would likely change.
You need to put in the work and have the dedication to succeed and overcome
obstacles. Simply put, hope alone will not lead to success and happiness. Now, this
isn’t to say that hope is inherently bad or useless. Hope is important as it allows us to
believe that we can improve and that things can be better. I would go as far as
to say that hope is essentially necessary to achieve your goals and overcome
life’s challenges. If we remain hopeful that things can improve, we are more
likely to be motivated to come up with a true strategy, and take the actions necessary,
to improve them. For the most part, I believe it is correct to say that hope
and a strategy are necessary to help one succeed and overcome obstacles. Yet, I
think it is also important to mention that hope, while mostly good and necessary,
can in some ways be a detriment. People who hope or wish for things that are
impossible or utopic can live miserable lives as they will always be hoping and
wishing for something that can and will never happen. As long as the thing a
person hopes for isn’t impossible or completely unrealistic, hope and strategy
both have value and are necessary to improve yourself, overcome challenges, and
achieve goals.
I apply this idea of hope not being a strategy, but still being
important, to my own life. Some of my major goals in life are to get into a good
college, graduate, and land a decent job as a computer programmer. Even though
I know that this will be difficult and take a lot of hard work, I remain
hopeful that things will all work out in the end. But again, I don’t solely rely
on hope. I have a plan of what I need to do for all of these things to happen,
a strategy. I take actions, like taking AP classes, that increase my likelihood
of both being college prepared and getting into a good college. It is through a
combination of hope and strategy that I will be able to achieve my goals.
