I Am From
I am from opening day Oakland A’s games with my grandma and uncle,
Sitting behind home plate and eating hot dogs.
I am from Little League baseball,
Pitching and playing second base for my team,
Helping guide our team to victory.
I am from Christmas Eve at my great-grandparents’ house,
Eating turkey and exchanging white elephant gifts.
I am from Thanksgiving at my grandma’s house.
Competing with cousins playing Left, Right, Center,
The champion taking the pot.
Gathering around the table to feast on turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy,
Ending the night with grandma's homemade apple pie.
I am from cutting down a fresh Christmas tree every year.
Going to a farm and looking until we stumble upon the perfect one.
And waking up early Christmas morning to a living room filled with holiday cheer, overflowing with gifts.
I am from spending time after school at my grandparents’ house while my mom worked.
Playing Scrabble and Clue with them,
And going to the movie theater every Wednesday.
I am from target practice with my grandpa every Friday
And going on long hikes with him each weekend.
I am from weekly library trips with my mom,
Checking out dozens of books at a time.
Acquiring knowledge, anything I could get my hands on.
I am from growing my collection at home,
Hundreds of books on my shelves.
I am from pizookies from BJ’s Brewhouse on every birthday,
And family pizza nights every Friday.
I am from my mom’s homemade spaghetti and meatballs,
And her grilled cheese and tomato soup on a cold, rainy day.
I am from annual summer trips to Yosemite.
Taking long hikes through the serene forest,
Hearing a bear rumble in the brush just a few yards away from us.
Lounging in hammocks and playing in the water.
From evacuating our cabin early in the morning as the forest burned.
I am from summers in Utah visiting my dad.
Taking weekend trips to Bear Lake,
Spending hours driving around jet skis with my step-siblings.
I am from spectacular Fourth of July celebrations.
Attending parades and fireworks shows on the hill with my dad.
