5- Vivian L: Object of the Week: Flashlight

Darkness, flashing, light. Darkness, then a flash, then light. The unknown and the known. The hidden and the visable.

What do we do when in a power outage? We use a flashlight to get around. What about when working on something in the dark? A flashlight. Whether it is from an actual hand held flashlight or your phone, we depend on light to see when stuck in darkness. While some people may interpret a flashlight as its exact meaning, a handheld electric device that gives light when turned on, I interpret it differently.

It is very common for little kids to be afraid of the dark, so they usually have nightlights. I however, never grew out of my “being afraid of the dark” phase. Yes, I still have a nightlight (it helps me sleep stop making fun of me). I believe that nightlights represented safety for little kids, safety from the darkness (and monsters too).

I see flashlights the same way. To me, when you are in the dark you are unable to see certain things, but when turning on that flashlight, you are able to see everything. I connect this interpretation to life because many times in my life I find myself “in the dark” in situations and am unable to see the truth until my “flashlight” is turned on. Without that flashlight being turned on, people lie to you or hurt you in ways you may never know.

To me flashlights mean so much more than just a device that helps you out when in power outages. It is a symbol of truth and revealing what is truly occurring.
