Surface Pressure
Strength, lifting yourself up, lifting others up, mentally, physically, strength can be a tiring gift to have. We all as humans have been given a role in which we need to be strong. Whether your role is in your family, your job, or relationships, strength is something others surrounding you rely on.
Pressure, the pressure that sinks deep weight onto your shoulders when you are trying to be strong for others. The questions posing in your head, “what if I’m not strong enough?” “What if I let them down?”
Recently a character in the new and beloved disney movie, Encanto, a character named Luisa shares her struggles with being strong for others and the extreme pressure that she faces on a day to day basis. In the movie, Luisa has the power of super strength and is constantly using it to help those around her and in her town with their needs, additionally being the middle sibling Luisa has been the rock for her family emotionally for years. In luisa’s song she goes over all of the ways she feels pressure and how her physical and mental strength comes with challenges.
One of my favorite lines from the song reads, “ Under the surface, I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service”. As I am also the middle child of 2 sisters I relate to Luisa in many different ways, but the biggest one is how she feels useless if she gives up or isn't working for others. This quote shows just how our minds can manipulate us to think we are not good enough when we aren’t strong enough to complete something. Everyone feels weak or becomes weak to obstacles from time to time, yet this does not define us as people.
Our strength is an asset, not a necessity, and the pressure from others to be stronger is more often that of our own imagination.
