15 -Emily G: Supermarket Realizations

Growing up, I endured a lot of grief. I watched family members slowly meet terms with a long life well-lived and even watched some of the closest people come to the defeation of health struggles. I was young and frankly uneducated in the world of death, and this often placed me in a position of being unaware of complicated ideas.

I did not understand the concept of a legacy until an old lady in the supermarket expressed her sympathy toward me as I was buying flowers for my grandma's funeral; this old lady didn't know it but she introduced me to the true meaning of legacies, as she told me ‘there would be an abundance of legacy waiting to overtake me’. I asked my mom about what this exactly meant, and me, being ten years old and battling the grief I felt, my mom gently handed me my grandma's necklace and told me it is the representation of my grandma’s legacy.

I have held onto this necklace for years and it has become a staple in my belongings. I also include a rosary my grandma granted to me hanging from my rearview mirror in my car, knowing she is there protecting me, as well as God.

The word legacy can mean multiple different things to individuals; it can be tangible items retrieved from loved ones, and/or intangible concepts such as personality traits passed down from those have passed. My grandma left both.
