Everyone has that one specific reminder of their loved ones; existing as either a popular family quote or an infamous family recipe, all stemming from that thing that is just their thing. Despite the possibilities, it is hardly a tangible item, yet my reminder is flip flops.
To me, flips flops represent my mom. Her obsession with just not buying them, but the colorful patterns and the endless ways they can be used to describe her favorite season of Summer, is one way I feel connected to her. Flip flops are a symbol of my mom- they are objects of her strength and boldness, due to their tendency to last fairly long for being a piece of rubber and the funky colors they can come in. Everyone who knows my mom knows her love for these horrible tan-line, but comfortable pursuers.
My dad, with his million pairs of the same exact flip flop, is one of those dads that are always wearing cargo shorts, sunglasses, and most importantly, flip flops, even if it is the middle of December. He is obsessed with the “dad flops” that nine times out of ten has a bottle opener attached to the bottom and a sturdy base stable enough to withstand a hurricane. He is quite literally the definition of a middle aged dad who raised his kids in the 2000s.
At any given time, when I see a pair of flip flops, visuals of my parents come flooding in and thoughts of them linger. There will never be a time where I do not think of them whenever I come across this one tangible symbol of their identities.

The story you wrote is relatable since they are many things that I associate with family. My grandfather likes classic rock and every time I hear it reminds me of him. The memories of our loved ones can really brighten our day
ReplyDeleteEmily, this blog was so fun to read! I love how flip flops remind you of your parents. I liked how you talk about how they represent your mom's strength and boldness. Drawing the picture of how flip flops are just a piece of rubber that comes in funky colors, but they hold a sentimental reminder to you. This is such a cool story about flip flops that I would never have thought I would say! Anyways great job and thank you for sharing!
