Throughout my entire life, I’ve been surrounded by a large,
loving family that has only grown larger as time has gone on. When my parents
divorced when I was a young kid in kindergarten, my family life was turned
upside down. Despite the personal problems my mom and dad had with each other,
family members from both sides of my family continued to show my sister and me
unconditional love and support as we navigated through the messy divorce. And
to me, that is really what family is all about, showing unconditional love and
support to one another and having each other’s backs through the most difficult
parts of life. Sometimes though, family members can be toxic and can prevent
you from becoming your best self and succeeding. In that case, it is important
to realize that you don’t need to deal with them and can cut them off.
Although we often think of family as those we are related to
by blood, family can often be much more than that. Both of my parents
eventually remarried and my family grew larger as I gained new step-parents,
step-siblings, and half-siblings. Although we are not related by blood, I am
much closer and have much better relationships with some of my step-siblings
than I do with many of my family members to whom I am related by blood. In
fact, in my specific case, I feel like some of the closest relationships I have
with my family members are with family members who I am not related to by blood
like my uncle who married into the family.
